Going Vegan: A Natural Extension of Meditation

Many people choose to adopt a vegan lifestyle for ethical, environmental, or health reasons. For those who practice meditation, going vegan can be a natural extension of their spiritual journey. Here's why:

Ethical Considerations

  • Animal compassion: Veganism aligns with the principle of non-harm and compassion for all beings.
  • Environmental impact: The meat and dairy industries contribute significantly to deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and water pollution. By going vegan, you can reduce your environmental footprint.
  • Vegan vs. Vegetarian: The vegan diet omits all animal products including dairy, eggs, and even honey. The vegetarian diet allows dairy, eggs, and honey as long as these products are produced ethically and do not harm animals.
  • Know the Differences: If you choose to eat eggs, understand that Pasture Raised is the most ethical and that Cage Free still means the chickens are crowded and possibly mistreated. Grass Fed beef still means the cow has to be slaughtered - it is not any more ethical than Corn Fed beef. Dairy can be acceptable if the cow was naturally inseminated, gets to keep and raise its calf, and lives a long, free-range, drug-free life dying of natural causes.

Health Benefits

  • Improved nutrition: A well-planned vegan diet can provide all the essential nutrients.
  • Reduced risk of chronic diseases: Vegan diets have been linked to lower rates of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
  • Increased energy: Many people report feeling more energetic and focused after adopting a vegan diet.
  • Protein: Appropriate protein needs can be met through legumes (beans and lentils), whole grains, and nuts.
  • Vitamins: Many people claim that some vitamins can only come from animal meat. All the necessary vitamins are available in a vegan diet but be prepared to discover new foods such as nutritional yeast, miso, and tofu to get the full spectrum of vitamins.
  • Recipes: The Internet has many recipes for everyday vegan dishes. Cookbooks tend to have more exotic recipes. Try to stay away from "meat" substitutes, which tend to be highly processed. It's easy to find familiar dishes with a vegan spin. For example, Google, "Vegan Chickpea Noodle Soup" to find great comfort food recipes.
  • Frozen Meals: If you are not much of a cook, there are a lot of frozen vegan meals and meal plans. Be careful with sodium levels which should be about 20% or less, and fat content. Purple Carrot, some of Amy's Kitchen Foods, and Gardein or brands commonly found at everyday grocery stores.

Spiritual Alignment

  • Non-violence: Veganism reflects a commitment to non-violence, which is a core principle in many spiritual practices.
  • Mindfulness and awareness: Adopting a vegan lifestyle can increase mindfulness and awareness of your impact on the world.
  • Connection with nature: By choosing plant-based foods, you can deepen your connection with the natural world.

For meditators, going vegan can be a powerful way to:

  • Reinforce your commitment to non-harm: Veganism aligns with the principle of ahimsa, which means non-violence.
  • Enhance your mindfulness practice: By paying attention to your food choices, you can cultivate greater awareness and mindfulness.
  • Deepen your connection with nature: Veganism can help you appreciate the interconnectedness of all living beings.
  • Support a more sustainable and compassionate world: By reducing your consumption of animal products, you can contribute to a healthier planet and a more just society.

If you are considering going vegan, it's important to do your research and ensure you are getting all the necessary nutrients. There are many resources available to help you transition to a vegan lifestyle. By making the decision to go vegan, you can make a positive impact on your health, the environment, and the world around you.
