Zafu Meditation Cushion Review
Posted by Jay Suthers on Jun 17th, 2014
The Zafu Meditation Cushion is the standard in meditation cushions. It is the traditional round cushion with pleated sides and filled with either kapok, a cotton-fiber like substance or buckwheat hulls, the non-food chaff of the buckwheat grain. When originally created hundreds of years ago, the Zafu was filled with fibers from the Cotton Tail plant. The fibers from the pods of the Kapok tree, similar to the milkweed seeds you see floating around in the fall season, are in greater abundance and easier to manage. For this reason, Kapok has been the traditional fill for the Zafu Meditation Cushion for many decades.
More recently, the outer hull of the Buckwheat grain has been used to fill the Zafu. The Buckwheat Hulls have increased in popularity because it creates such a comfortable sitting cushion. Since the hulls are separate pieces that move around inside the cushion, they easily conform to the shape of the body and relieve any sort of pressure point in the buttocks. Imagine sitting on a mound of sand at the beach. Although the sand is hard grains of tiny rocks, you will see that you leave an impression in the sand perfectly matched to you. This is why many people who use buckwheat hull Zafu cushions say it gives a more "grounded" feel.
Our Zafu Meditation Cushions are available with either Kapok or Buckwheat Hulls.
The Zafu Meditation Cushion is sometimes referred to as a meditation pillow. It really doesn't matter. A pillow or a cushion is very helpful to achieving a good sitting posture for meditation. One does not sit directly on top of the Zafu. One generally sits on the front half of the Zafu. This allows the crossed legs to naturally slope down. This rotates the hips forward and causes the lower back to curve in. This simple curve causes the entire spine to align naturally for an easeful sitting posture during meditation.
The Zafu Meditation Cushion is oftentimes matched with a Zabuton Meditation Cushion as seen in the image above. The large mat, filled with soft cotton batting, provides additional cushioning for the legs, knees, ankles, and feet. It can be very helpful at reducing the onset of leg numbness that oftentimes occurs during sitting meditation.
Our Zafu and Zabuton Meditation Cushions are available as economy versions where the covers are not removable. These cushions are practical and affordable. But, for little more cost, we also offer deluxe versions with removable covers that can be washed. If you purchase the Zafu and Zabuton Meditation cushions together, there is additional savings on these sets.
While many meditators prefer the traditional Zafu Meditation Cushion, we offer other styles of meditation cushions in terms of shape, size, and lift including the very popular Cosmic Cushion, which is possibly the most comfortable meditation cushion available.
